A complete guide to relocating to the Canary Islands with your dog or cat

If you’re considering moving to Tenerife with your pet as a foreigner, you’re not alone. More and more people are choosing the island as their new home — and for many, that includes bringing a dog or cat along.

The good news is: yes, you can move to Tenerife with your pet. But you’ll need to comply with a series of health, travel, and administrative requirements, depending on the country you’re coming from.

In this guide, we explain everything you need to know to travel to Tenerife with a pet and live comfortably and legally on the island.

1. Entry requirements for pets in Spain

If you’re coming from the European Union:

  • Microchip identification (ISO standard 11784/11785).
  • EU Pet Passport, issued by an authorised veterinarian.
  • Valid rabies vaccination, at least 21 days before travel and after 12 weeks of age.

If you’re coming from a non-EU country (UK, Switzerland, USA, etc.):

  • Veterinary health certificate with identification and vaccination details.
  • Microchip is mandatory.
  • Rabies vaccination must be current.
  • Some countries also require a rabies antibody test.
  • Entry into Spain must be through an approved Border Control Point, where pets may undergo a veterinary check.

📌 Always check the official website of the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture or consult your vet at least 2 months before your trip.

2. How to transport your pet to Tenerife

Since Tenerife is an island, your pet must arrive by plane or ferry.

By air:

  • Small pets (up to 8–10 kg including the carrier) may travel in the cabin.
  • Larger pets must travel in the airline’s pressurised cargo hold.
  • Each airline has its own rules. Make sure to confirm carrier dimensions, fees, and pet policies in advance.
  • A certified pet carrier with proper ventilation and secure closure is required.

By ferry (from mainland Spain):

  • Ferry companies such as Fred. Olsen and Naviera Armas allow pets onboard.
  • Some ships have pet-friendly cabins or designated areas with ventilation.
  • It’s a longer trip, but may be more comfortable for larger or nervous pets.

3. After arriving in Tenerife: What to do

If you plan to stay more than 6 months, your pet must be registered in ZOOCAN — the official animal registry for the Canary Islands.

Other things to keep in mind:

  • Keep your pet’s microchip and health documents up to date.
  • Bring their health certificate and vaccination records.
  • If you’re renting, make sure your accommodation allows pets (especially in tourist areas, where restrictions are more common).

4. Veterinary care and services in Tenerife

Tenerife has a wide network of veterinary clinics, especially in larger towns and tourist areas.

  • Basic consultation: €25–€40
  • Annual vaccines and check-ups: €30–€60
  • Emergency care: from €80 (depending on the case)

In areas like Los Cristianos, Puerto de la Cruz, La Laguna, or Costa Adeje, you’ll likely find English- and German-speaking veterinarians.

📍 Tip: Some municipalities offer free vaccination or sterilisation campaigns — check with your local town hall.

5. Is Tenerife pet-friendly?

Tenerife is gradually becoming more welcoming to pets. Though there are still some restrictions (e.g., beaches and public transport), you’ll find:

  • Dog-friendly beaches, like El Cabezo and El Puertito in Güímar
  • Hiking trails and green areas ideal for daily walks (leash required)
  • Pet-friendly hotels and holiday rentals, especially with advance booking
  • Growing availability of pet shops, grooming salons, and dog parks

🚌 Public transport note: Pets are not allowed on the tram. On buses (guaguas), only small pets in carriers are permitted.

6. Do I need insurance for my pet in Tenerife?

Not always, but it’s strongly recommended.

  • If your dog is a potentially dangerous breed (PPP), insurance and a special license are mandatory.
  • For all other pets, you can choose veterinary insurance, liability insurance, or a combined policy.

Typical costs:

  • Civil liability insurance: from €30/year
  • Veterinary insurance: €100–€300/year
  • Combined plans: from €12–€20/month
