Healthcare for EU citizens in Tenerife

Healthcare for EU citizens in Tenerife is an issue of great relevance to those residing or planning to reside in Tenerife. As part of Spain, it offers a range of healthcare options which vary according to each individual’s personal situation. This is due to the different conventions and agreements that exist between EU member states and other countries. In this article, we will explain in detail the different options available for retirees and workers. In addition, we will explain the requirements and processes needed to access these services.

Health care for retirees residing in Tenerife

EU citizens residing in Spain and receiving a retirement pension are entitled to health care for the individual. This benefit is obtained through a bilateral agreement between EU states, where the country of origin of the pension pays the medical expenses in Spain. At Asesoría Quintero we handle the entire process for you and help you obtain the necessary documentation:

  • Authorisation of residence in Spain.
  • Certificate of census registration.
  • Document S1 or E121.

These documents must be presented at the Spanish Social Security offices. The procedure can be carried out online after issuing the digital certificate. In our accompaniment service we offer to carry out the procedures to obtain the Digital Certificate and we also offer our clients the possibility of assistance in their language throughout the process.

Health care for EU citizens under 65 years of age resident in Tenerife

EU citizens residing in Spain who are not linked to any retirement pension have different options for accessing health care:

1. Employed workers: those citizens who work for a private or public company under the general scheme are entitled to healthcare through their employment.

2. Self-employed workers: Citizens who register under the special scheme for self-employed workers are also entitled to health care.

In both cases, as EU citizens, affiliation to the social security system guarantees access to public health services.

Health care for Swiss pensioners in Tenerife

Swiss retirees are entitled to health care in Spain, but require prior authorisation from their country of origin. In addition, they must apply for a special agreement with the General Treasury of the Social Security in Spain. This procedure can also be carried out online using a Digital Certificate and in the same way as in the previous cases, Asesoría Quintero accompanies the interested party in each of the procedures to be carried out in their language.

Once the special agreement has been approved, Swiss citizens must pay a monthly fee of between 80 and 100 euros in order to maintain their health cover in Spain.

Health care for EU citizens in Tenerife is available through various methods, depending on the individual’s employment and retirement status. From processing documentation for retirees to social security affiliation for workers, there are multiple ways to ensure access to medical services in Spain.

The collaboration between EU states and the support in administrative procedures that we at Asesoría Quintero provide ensure that European citizens can receive the healthcare they need during their residence in Tenerife.
